Learn about our Purpose
What We Do
Our dedicated volunteers and hardworking staff operate our core programs from our Para Hills West warehouse.
Here's how we make a difference:

Sorting and Preparing Donations
Volunteers sort, tally, screen, check, and store donated items that have been collected from 40+ collection points across South Australia. These items are categorised and ready to be packed into backpacks.
Packing Backpacks
Volunteers follow an age and gender-specific packing list to prepare each Backpack. These lists have been curated in partnership with child welfare professionals we collaborate with. Each Backpacks receives a quality check to ensure they meet our high standards.
Addressing Shortfalls
Using cash donations and funds raised through various activities including grants, our Backpacks 4 SA Kids Coordinators purchase items that we may be low in supply to ensure every backpack is complete and ready for distribution.
We also actively reach out to donors and collaborate with in-kind suppliers when specific items are in short supply. We leverage our strong relationships with local businesses, community groups, and corporate partners to source the necessary goods.
Storage and Order Fulfillment
Completed Backpacks are stored on our extensive shelving system until requests come in from the agencies we support across the State. When an order is received, our team assembles the Backpacks ready for distribution.
Distribution
Once the order is finalised, the Backpacks are prepared for delivery to, or collection from the requesting agency. Agency workers then distribute them directly to children, young people, or families in need. The same process applies to our Home Starter Packs and Anchor Packs.
Volunteer Contributions
With the exception of a small core team, nearly all tasks are completed by our incredible volunteers, who work tirelessly to support vulnerable children and young people.
Beyond the Day-to-Day
Our work extends beyond these core activities, we also:
- Host sessions for new volunteers (individuals and corporate groups)
- Visit community groups and schools to promote awareness of Backpacks 4 SA Kids
- Build relationships with new agencies and seek to grown awareness with new agencies
- Fill emergency orders and provide relief aid in the form of laptops, mobile phones, and more
- Organise special initiatives, such as the annual Christmas Drive and fundraising events
Thanks to our volunteers and supporters, we’re able to make a lasting impact on the lives of children and families in need across South Australia.
We have supported Backpacks4SAKids for a while and have finally been approved as foster carers. Our first visitors came with Backpacks. I didn’t think much of it to be honest, but I showed them to their room and they carefully put away the things from the backpacks. I waited for them to come back to the lounge room and when they did they still had their backpacks on their backs and grinning from ear to ear. They only had their toys, books, colouring and DVD left in the backpacks and the clothes, pyjamas and underwear were in their drawers…but those smiles took my breath away. You do something so simple, but it works for these kids. Amazing.
